Protecting a special neighbourhood takes more than one organization, one campaign, or one group of residents. It takes a community.

That’s why the Kelowna Heritage Conservation Area Protectors (KHCAP) are proud to support the Friends and Residents of the Abbott Street Heritage Conservation Area Society (FRAHCAS) and the important role the Society has played in our neighbourhood for many years.

We also encourage those who care about the HCA to consider FRAHCAS membership as a simple way to support the organization and strengthen its community voice.

Two Organizations, One Shared Community

FRAHCAS and KHCAP are separate organizations, but we share something very important: a desire to see Kelowna’s Abbott Street Heritage Conservation Area protected, appreciated and thoughtfully cared for as our city grows.

FRAHCAS is the established neighbourhood society representing friends and residents of the Heritage Conservation Area. Over the years, its volunteers have advocated for the neighbourhood, encouraged appreciation of its heritage, and provided an important connection between residents and the City.

KHCAP has developed more recently, with a particular focus on public education, research, advocacy and keeping people informed about current issues affecting the Heritage Conservation Area.

We believe those roles can complement each other.

Rather than duplicating the good work already being done, KHCAP hopes to help amplify it — sharing information, reaching more people and encouraging greater community participation.

Why FRAHCAS Membership Matters

A FRAHCAS household membership costs just $10 per year.

Membership isn’t really about receiving $10 worth of benefits. Its value is much bigger than that.

When a neighbourhood organization speaks to City staff or elected officials, the number of residents and households standing behind that organization matters. A strong membership demonstrates that people care about what happens to their neighbourhood and want a voice in its future.

Every additional member strengthens that collective voice.

Membership is also a simple way for people who value the Heritage Conservation Area — whether because they live here, walk here, cycle here, visit the beaches and parks, work nearby, appreciate Kelowna’s history, or simply believe distinctive neighbourhoods are worth preserving — to show their support.

You Don’t Have to Live in a Heritage House to Care About the HCA

The Abbott Street Heritage Conservation Area belongs to more than the people who happen to own homes within its boundaries.

Its mature tree canopy, historic streetscapes, architecture, green spaces and proximity to Kelowna General Hospital, beaches and parks make it an important part of the wider community.

You don’t need to own a century-old house to believe those qualities are worth protecting. You simply need to care about the kind of city Kelowna becomes as it grows.

Stronger Together

KHCAP will continue researching and communicating about issues affecting the Heritage Conservation Area, sharing its history and character, and advocating for responsible growth that respects what makes this neighbourhood special.

At the same time, we’re proud to support FRAHCAS and encourage people in our community to become members.

If you already follow KHCAP, read our articles, signed the petition or simply care about the future of the Abbott Street Heritage Conservation Area, consider taking one more small step:

Become a FRAHCAS member.

For just $10 per household per year, it’s a simple way to add your voice to the community working to protect and sustain one of Kelowna’s most distinctive neighbourhoods.

Our voices are stronger together.
